Vascular Access

Venous Access Ports

An access port is a device used to draw blood and give treatments, including intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, or drugs such as chemotherapy and antibiotics. It is attached to a catheter (a thin, flexible tube) that is guided (threaded) into a large vein above the right side of the heart called the superior vena cava.

Arteriovenous Fistula

An AV fistula is a connection, made by a vascular specialist, of an artery to a vein. Arteries carry blood from the heart to the body, while veins carry blood from the body back to the heart. An AV fistula creates extra pressure and extra blood to flow into the vein.

Arteriovenous Graft

An AV graft is a small plastic tube that connects an artery to a vein, in a similar fashion to an AV fistula.
